Tequila is a distilled spirit that's made from the blue agave plant. It gets its name from the area in which it's produced, surrounding the city of Tequila in the central-western Mexican state of Jalisco. Mexican law states that tequila can only be produced in the state of Jalisco and limited towns in the states of Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas.
Tequila is a type of mezcal, which is a spirit produced from the agave plant. Mezcal can be made with a number of different agave varieties. However, unlike mezcal, tequila can only be made with a specific blue agave plant, Weber's blue agave. The agave plant can take over seven years to fully mature. Once matured, the agave farmers cut off the leaves of the plant and expose the heart (piñas) which are sent off to a distillery to be turned into tequila.
When it comes to drinking tequila, you have a few different options. Choosing how you would like to drink tequila all comes down to personal preference. There is no right or wrong way to drink it, as long as you're enjoying it!
Drink it straight up
The most common way of drinking tequila like the locals is to keep it in the fridge and drink it solo. In Mexico, tequila is often served chilled and drank by itself. You can also drink tequila on ice, or at room temperature.
Add it into a margarita
Margaritas are one of the most common ways to drink tequila. Cinco de Mayo isn't the only time you can enjoy the delicious flavors of tequila, though. Try mixing your own margaritas at home and experiment with different tequilas and flavors.
Drink it with lime and salt
A common way to take a tequila shot is alongside sliced lime and salt. Some people prefer this method since the lime and salt can mask the strong flavors in tequila.
Add it to a mixed drink
Margaritas aren't the only cocktails that contain tequila. It's also a common mixer in other drinks like:
- Tequila & soda
- Tequila & grapefruit juice
- Tequila & orange juice
- Tequila & pineapple juice
Is tequila stronger than vodka?
When talking about ABV tequila and vodka contain about the same amount. The average for both is around 40%, but some vodka can go as high as 95%, while tequila maxes out at around 60%.
