You may have seen ‘red blend’ on a wine label and wondered, what is a red blend wine? Red blend is a wine that is made from a variety of different types of grapes. As opposed to wines such as Merlot or Pinot Noir, a red blend can be made from a diverse combination of grape types.
What does a red blend taste like?
Red blends allow a winemaker to blend grapes and essentially design a wine’s flavors. There are all different types of red blends and it is impossible to say that red blends have a specific flavor. Some red blends may have a more tannin-rich flavor due to a high concentration of Cabernet in the blend, while others can be more light from the addition of more Pinot.
What pairs well with a red blend?
Because of the diverse flavors in red blends, it’s easy to pair them with many different foods. Compared to white wines, red wine generally has a much bolder palate and pairs well with fuller dishes. Try pairing a red blend with grilled meats like steak, lamb, or chicken. You can also create a nice combination of a red blend and pasta in a cream sauce with mushrooms, or a hearty meat sauce like bolognese. Any red wine always pairs nicely with sharp and pungent cheese like cheddar, goat cheese, or gorgonzola.
How to serve a red blend
A common misconception about red wine is that it should be served at room temperature. However, unless you keep your room quite chilly, then this is an outdated way of thinking about wine. Red wine should be served in a range of 55°F–65°F. You can pop your red blend in the ridge for about 20 minutes to get it to the optimal temperature for enjoyment. Serve a red blend in a red wine glass to allow the wine to oxidize and the flavors to fully release.
