What is National Tequila Day?
Did you know tequila is so popular that there is a whole day dedicated to it? National Tequila Day is July 24th and we’re here to give you some information on the history of tequila and give you some fun tips on how to celebrate the day!
When is National Tequila Day?
National Tequila Day is July 24th. You may have thought Cinco De Mayo - May 5th- is National Tequila Day, but these two dates are not to be confused. Although they both involve margaritas, Cinco de Mayo is dedicated to celebrating Mexico's 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla, while National Tequila Day is dedicated to celebrating tequila.
The history of tequila
In order to appreciate National Tequila Day, we must first learn the history of tequila. Let’s travel back to around 1000 B.C., when Mexican tribes drank pulque, which was a frothy, creamy agave drink. Pulque could be considered the original tequila, as they both are made using the blue agave plant.
Around 16th Century A.D., the tequila that we all know and love started being produced in an area of Mexico suitably called, Tequila. During this time, the Spanish invaded Mexico and tasted fermented mezcal. They weren’t too pleased with the flavor and started to distill the wine in copper stills, this drink became known as ‘mezcal wine.’
In 1795, Don Jose Antonio de Cuervo made the first ‘Vino Mezcal de Tequila’ in Tequila, Mexico. He was the first person to hold a license for manufacturing tequila. Jose Cuervo is still a popular brand of tequila today.
Today, in order to be considered tequila, the drink must be produced in Jalisco, Mexico. Every tequila that you will ever drink has come from that region. However, in 2006, the U.S. and Mexico signed an agreement stating that tequila could be purchased in bulk from Mexico and bottled elsewhere.
How to celebrate National Tequila Day
The obvious choice for how to celebrate National Tequila Day is by taking a shot and yelling ‘Happy National Tequila Day!’ Here are some other fun ways to celebrate:
Make yourself a fun margarita
What we love about margaritas is that there are endless flavor options. From watermelon to mango, you can infuse a margarita with basically any fruit you have in the house. You can also experiment with different flavors and make yourself something exotic, like this spicy jalapeño margarita!
Spicy Jalapeño Margarita (makes one serving)
Ingredients:
- Kosher salt and a lime wedge to rim the glass
- Ice
- 2 ounces silver tequila (about 3 tablespoons)
- 3 tbsp freshly squeezed lime juice (fresh is 100x better than bottled)
- 1 tbsp freshly squeezed orange juice
- 1 1/2 tsp light agave nectar (you can add more if you prefer it sweeter)
- 1/4 to 1/2 jalapeño pepper cut into thin, round slices (use more for more spicer)
- Lime wedges additional jalapeño slices for serving
To make:
- Begin by pouring salt onto a plate. Take a lime wedge and rub it around the edge of your margarita glass. Dip the damp edge of the glass into the salt. Fill the glass with ice.
- In a cocktail shaker, add ice and all your other ingredients. Close it tightly and shake for 30 seconds. Strain the drink into your glass and enjoy.
Make a Mexican themed boozy brunch
Nothing says National Tequila Day more than a Mexican brunch with tequila cocktails. Serve up some delicious Mexican food like burritos, enchiladas, beans and rice, and tamales. Pair the food with different tequila infused cocktails like Tequila Sunrise, Palomas, and Margaritas.
Make tequila popsicles
Since National Tequila Day falls in July, chances are it's going to be pretty hot that day. What better way to cool off than with tequila popsicles? They're basically a frozen version of your favorite tequila cocktail! To make these delicious treats, simply choose your juice, add in some tequila, and pop them into the freezer for 1-2 hours. If you don't have regular popsicle trays then you can use an ice cube tray and make mini popsicles!
