Petite Sirah is a separate grape type, not just a smaller variant of Syrah (or Shiraz). Petite Sirah is a hybrid of Syrah and Peloursin grapes. Peloursin is practically extinct and only found in a few locations in the French Alps, so it's acceptable if you've never heard of it. Petite Sirah has a long shelf life. In reality, wine often takes two decades or more to become civilized and enjoyable to drink. I've had bottles that were 40 years old and still fresh, concentrated, and vivid. Petite Sirah is one of the darkest, most opaque red wines, with significant anthocyanin levels (an antioxidant). Tannat and Sagrantino are two wines that are similar in color to Petite Sirah.

The texture of this wine is described as chewy and strong. The flavors of plums and smokey, dark-berried fruits abound in Petite Sirah. Spices, dark chocolate, caramel, licorice, and coffee are among the flavors released. Petite Sirah from warmer California regions has bolder fruits and often higher alcohol, whereas Petite Sirah from cooler California climes has somewhat sour fruits, more earthy flavors, and notes of citrus.

With notes of black fruits and vanilla spice, this blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Barbera, and Primitivo creates layers of complexity. It has a lot of taste, yet it has a smooth and long finish because of the medium body, balanced aromas, and acidity. Four different wine varieties, all cultivated in Lodi, make up this unusual mix. Our Estate property is the source of these grapes, aside from the Old Vine Zinfandel. This mix is led by Zinfandel, followed by Primitivo, Barbera, and Petite Sirah. The Hohenrieder vineyard was established in 1964 and produces Zinfandel. There are both head-trained and California T-trellis vines in this vineyard.
This wine is a blend of 69 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 15 percent Merlot, 10 percent Petite Sirah, and 6 percent Syrah. It is dense with scents of black cherry, black currant, roasted wood, dark mint, and fennel. The palate has a thick structure, with notes of black cherry, cassis, and dry herbs that are robust and rounded.
