For more than a century, the 8th of March has been observed as a special day for women all across the world. Let's delve into the specifics of this historic day.
What is the history of women's day?
International Women's Day came out of the labor movement to become a recognized annual event by the United Nations. In 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter working hours, higher pay, and the opportunity to vote, and the seeds of the movement were planted. A year later, the Socialist Party of America announced the first National Woman's Day. Clara Zetkin came up with the notion of making the day international. In 1910, she proposed the notion at a Copenhagen International Conference of Working Women. There were 100 women in attendance, representing 17 countries, and they unanimously agreed with her offer.
It was initially observed in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland in 1911. The centennial was commemorated in 2011, therefore this year marks the 111th year of International Women's Day.
Why do we celebrate women's day on March 8?
Clara's proposal for an International Women's Day didn't have a specific date in mind. It wasn't formalized until 1917 when Russian women demanded "food and peace," the Tsar was forced to abdicate four days into the strike, and the provisional government granted women the right to vote. On the Julian calendar, which was in use in Russia at the time, the women's strike began on Sunday, February 23. The date was March 8th in the Gregorian calendar, which is when it is commemorated today.
