California distilleries are open for a visit and there are really good ones that you must see. For the first time since prohibition, state laws were recently modified. Distilleries can now open tasting rooms under the new law. It doesn't get any better than that, as far as we're aware. We compiled a list of some of the greatest California distilleries with tasting rooms, which we thought you might appreciate.
How many distilleries are in California?
The vineyards, wineries, and restaurants in California's wine country are among the best in the world. As a result, it stands to reason that the distilleries springing up among the vines will be of comparable quality. There were only a few in 2000, but by 2015, 75 California distilleries have added to the region's already rich tapestry.
Which Californian distilleries are worth visiting?
The owners of these 10 California distilleries listed below should be proud. On this list, you may expect to find distilleries that produce a wide spectrum of spirits, from eclectic to conventional. Take a look or, better yet, a taste.
KroBar Craft Distillery
KroBar Craft Distillery in Paso Robles is the result of 40 years of combined experience in the alcohol industry. They chose Vendome Copper and Brass Works in Louisville, KY to build their still because of this encounter. The distillery overlooks vineyards along Highway 46 and offers tastings from the Social Room or Ethanol Alley. You should try Rye Whiskey, Gin, Bourbon, and a white wine aperitif called Lit, as well as Kroener's Albario and Barton's Grenache Blanc and Viognier, to see how pleasant these botanical spirits may be. The speakeasy-style tasting area shares a terrace with the Grey Wolf Cellars of Barton Family Wines, where lunch is also available
Re:Find Handcrafted Spirits
Re:Find Handcrafted Spirits distills bleed, the free-run juice from premium red wine grapes before to fermentation, into excellent vodka and gin spirits. Alex and Monica Villicana, winemakers turned distillers, discovered that triple distillation transformed the juice into something special. This year saw the arrival of new rye whiskey and bourbon, as well as seasonal flavored spirits and an oak-infused vodka with spice and caramel that acts like whiskey. This California distillery transforms a martini into a unique, refined, and fashionable experience.
Young & Yonder Spirits
Armont Vodka, produced by Young & Yonder Spirits in Cloverdale, is a smooth, clean, crisp, and refined vodka that is good on the rocks or in a mixed cocktail. It is distilled six times and purified many times, resulting in a vodka that is smooth, clean, crisp, and polished. Their H.O.B.S. Gin, which stands for Harbor of Broken Souls, pays homage to the juniper, citrus, and floral spirit's history as a favorite of individuals who have spent their lives at sea. This handcrafted spirit has been years in the making, refining, and perfecting, displaying the right combination of juniper, lemon peel, coriander, lavender, hibiscus, bay leaf, angelica root, and cardamom.
Prohibition Spirits Distillery
At Sonoma's Cornerstone Gardens, Prohibition Spirits Distillery provides tastings of California's first organic LimonCello, Hooker's House Whiskeys, Sugar Daddy Rums, Jack's Gins, Chauvet Brandies, and specialty spirits that showcase the founders' expertise. In addition to spirits tastings, the team offers mixology workshops and hosts private and group events in the tranquil Cornerstone Gardens, which features an outdoor test kitchen, art-filled gardens, live music, boutique wines, and a gorgeous sunset view.
Alley 6 Craft Distillery
Alley 6 Craft Distillery is a micro-distillery in California that opened in 2012. Guests are treated to tastings of their Rye Whiskey, Single Malt Whiskey, Harvest Gin, Candy Cap Bitters, and a range of other handcrafted options while learning about the distillation process, followed by a distillery tour. Alley 6 Rye Whiskey has a nose of vanilla, spice, and rye, with a palate of caramel. Alley 6 Rye Whiskey is made up of 78 percent rye and 22 percent aromatic malted barley, matured in new severely charred American white oak. Alley 6 Single Malt Whiskey is currently exclusively available at the tasting room, making it a compelling reason to pay a visit.
Sonoma Coast Spirits
Sonoma Coast Spirits is a tiny craft California distillery in the Petaluma Maker's District with a beautiful view from its cozy tasting bar. The World Spirits Gold Medal for founders' Lemon Drop artisan drink is one of a dozen reasons why it's a favorite. They also make four different vodkas and three different Grappas. The Grappa is manufactured using a recipe passed down through generations under their own label in Santa Rosa prior to Prohibition. Samples of artisan cocktails allow the Olsons to share their enthusiasm on-site as well as take home, thanks to new 2016 rules allowing sales to the public in the tasting area
Sonoma County Distilling Company
As one of the first 200 distilleries in the United States, Sonoma County Distilling Company in Rohnert Park started the trend in 2010. To achieve the appropriate alcohol content, distill twice. This artisanal distillery in California uses direct fire Alembic pot stills to provide a consistent flavor with a hint of caramelization. The spirit is then matured in new American oak from Missouri and Minnesota, using non-GMO California grains and malted barley smoked in Petaluma with California Cherrywood. The outcome is a grain-to-glass spirit that deserves to be noticed.
Spirit Works Distillery
Most of these small California distilleries follow the grain-to-glass principle, as does the Spirit Works Distillery in Sebastopol. Milling, mashing, fermenting, and distilling are done on-site. This artisan micro-distillery stays true to its roots by sourcing local organic ingredients whenever possible. Timo and Ashby Marshall enjoy sailing, mountaineering, and distilling beverages. At the Barlow Open Air Maker Marketplace, they are proudly providing their beverages.
One of America's oldest brandy makers is Charbay Distillery in St. Helena. They offer a great brandy line that began in 1983 with Alambic Pot Still Brandy. Charbay, like most of the high-end California distilleries, is a family business that has benefited from centuries of experience brought over from Europe. Whiskey, Tequila, Vodka, Rum, and Brandy are all made on a small scale, so there's something for everyone.
Napa Valley Distillery
The Napa Valley Distillery was the first distillery to open in Napa Valley since prohibition ended in 1933. Napa Valley Distillery offers tastings at both the Grand Tasting Salon in the distillery and the Vintage Bar Shop in the Oxbow Public Market in downtown Napa, where they make fantastic vodka made with single vintage Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc, as well as a dozen small-batch releases like Old Hollywood Ginn made with nine rare botanicals and a little oak. Their boutique also has over 400 cocktail bitters, syrups, shrubs, and accouterments from across the world. This is unquestionably one of the must-see distilleries in California.
