In the heart of Rioja Oriental, the founders of Barón de Ley planted the first 90 hectares of vines surrounding a 15th-century monastery where Benedictine monks were already making wine over 500 years ago.
From the very beginning, Barón de Ley specialized in "premium" wines (Reservas and Grand Reservas) from the winery’s own vineyards. Combining a very distinct Rioja identity with an open, innovative approach to winemaking, Barón de Ley has found its place among the big names in this DO with recognition by the international markets and critics.
Barón de Ley currently has a unique asset: over 600 hectares of vines, which guarantee top-quality wines with personality, giving the winemaking team free creative reign.
In 2019, this exciting project was expanded with the latest advancements in the industry. These include large cement tanks for making whites and rosés, a room with space for 30,000 barrels for the longer aging of red wines, and new manual sorting facilities, which see over 1.5 million kilos of grapes each year — quite a milestone in Rioja.
