Selección Especial is Abada Retuerta's dependable red blend, produced in sufficient quantities to ensure good availability and with an approachable and easy-to-understand profile that reached peak quality with the 2016 Selección Especial, which came from one of the region's best vintages in recent years. It's made up of 75% Tempranillo, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Syrah, 3% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, a blend that might change depending on the year's conditions and is selected by tasting the wines. If this wine used to be fairly oaky, 2016 is much more integrated and balanced, fruity and medium-bodied, with a soft and tender tongue, round tannins, and a moderate impact from the 13-month élevage in French and American oak barrels.
This wine's grapes were perfectly ripe and delicately fresh, resulting in a one-of-a-kind Crianza. Cedar, cocoa, vanilla, and orange peel scents, as well as black fruit aromas, pervade the wine. The palate is silky and full-bodied, with aromas of oak, spice, and ripe fruit. The mouthfeel of this fantastic wine is rich and round, with medium acidity and a silky tannin structure.
On the nose, this wine has a deep black cherry color with dominating aromas of jammy fruit and balsamic wood, as well as herbal infusions of tea, coconut, chocolate, and spices. It has a nice backbone and balance on the palate, as well as elegance and a lot of flavors. The grapes are harvested by hand from vineyards surrounding a 16th-century Benedictine abbey in Mendavia, Rioja Baja. Natural sediments in the bottle make this a highly recommended decanter.
The nose of Chateau Brane Cantenac Margaux Rouge 2014 is intense, with unusual notes of apricot, pineapple, and peach. On the second nostril, there are hints of white pepper and scarlet fruits. The tannins are quite delicate and the attack is round. The wine has a silky texture and remarkable length, which is complemented by a robust fragrant finish.
The 2016 Paleo Rosso is a wine of remarkable beauty, with off-the-charts vertical intensity. In a magnificent wine with remarkable depth in all of its qualities, sweet flowery, and spicy notes burst out of the glass. The vivid and finely molded scents of cedar, mocha, rose petal, red plum, and menthol. Paleo Rosso exemplifies the power of Cabernet Franc on the Tuscan coast. This is a fantastic vintage of the wine that, in my opinion, is Macchiole's flagship. It is a product of malolactic fermentation in cement and 18 months in French oak barrels.
This is an elegant wine with all the Vega Sicilia quality. Vega Sicilia Alion, which is highly esteemed in its own right, was never intended to be their second, as evidenced by the fact that the first vintage, released in 1995, was named to the Wine Spectator's list of the 100 greatest wines of the year. Alion is a modern-style wine with traditional roots, made entirely of Tinto Fino grapes. Vega Sicilia's rigorous attention to detail assures excellent quality standards throughout the whole winemaking process.
