Every year on April 7th, National Beer Day honors the world's most popular alcoholic beverage. It is also the third most popular drink overall, after water and tea.
History of National Beer Day
Beer may date back to 9500 BC, when cereal was first grown, making it one among the world's oldest prepared beverages. It's also mentioned in ancient Iraq's and Egypt's written histories. It inspired ancient Mesopotamians to write poems about it, believing it to be proof of divine existence. It was employed in a variety of religious ceremonies by the Ancient Egyptians. Monks brewed beer in their monasteries in Medieval Europe, elevating the craft of brewing to an art form.
Who came up with National Beer Day?
President Franklin D. Roosevelt took the first step toward repealing Prohibition on April 7, 1933, when he signed a law allowing citizens to brew and sell beer in the United States as long as it contained less than 4.0 percent (ABV). Beer enthusiasts rejoiced and expressed their delight at being able to purchase beer for the first time in thirteen years. Justin Smith, a Richmond, Virginia Craft Beer Examiner, and his buddy Mike Connolly, from Liverpool, England, founded National Beer Day. The Cullen-Harrison Act was signed into law on April 7th, and it went into effect on April 7th. Smith and Connolly started a Facebook page for National Beer Day in 2009. They encouraged friends to join this page, and word got out to a lot of people.
